Until 1985, no-one had ever used the expression 'environmental refugees'. And yet by 1999 there were 25 million of them scattered around the globe. Worse is probably to come Ö one source predicts 150 million environmental refugees by 2050! In this article, Brian Hoepper shows that it's actually an old problem. He takes you back to the ancient world to discover people fleeing their homes because of damaged environments. Then Brian traces the phenomenon through time, ending with the current debates about global warming, rising sea levels and disappearing island nations.
