Jewish History Sourcebook: The Black Death and the Jews 1348-1349 CE
In 1348 there appeared in Europe a devastating plague which is reported to have killed off ultimately twenty-five million people. By the fall of that year the rumor was current that these deaths were due to an international conspiracy of Jewry to poison Christendom. It was reported that the leaders in the Jewish metropolis of Toledo had initiated the plot and that one of the chief conspirators was a Rabbi Peyret who had his headquarters in Chambéry, Savoy, whence he dispatched his poisoners to France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Streicher, one of Hitler's earliest followers, published the paper from 1923 to 1945. During the Third Reich, Stürmer display cases were found all over Germany. Streicher was a thoroughly unsavory character, unpopular even with many fellow Nazis. He was executed for crimes against humanity in 1946.

Background: The following lead article from Der Stürmer appeared in March 1933, just after the Reichstag fire. The claim is that the fire was part of a world-wide Jewish conspiracy based on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The Protocols, a demonstrated forgery, were regularly used by Streicher to support his charge of a sinister world-wide Jewish conspiracy. Antisemitism has evolved over the centuries. We can point to several distinctly different forms of Antisemitism. The actual term was first used by the aforementioned William Marr in 1879, but the phenomena existed long before this. There are three main recognised forms of Antisemitism in history.
Antisemitism developed in the ancient world because of intolerance of the religious differences between pagan peoples and the Jews. Jews were the subjects of Antisemitism by Christians because Jews were viewed as evil and responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Modern Antisemitism takes on racial elements. In each case being perceived as different is the source of the Antisemitism.
